Surviving Your First Year of College
Thanks to the development of Internet and cinematography, we all start to have an idea about the college. By going to college, people usually associate themselves with the character from the movie, who has a perfect life: good academic performance, many friends, parties and interesting social meetings. But, unfortunately, not everyone can get this since no one has canceled such things as bullying, the difference in social status and insufficient money resources. Although, in the 21st century these things are no longer understood since for many it still has great importance what a person is in him/herself.
Below, you may find tips for college life and tricks how to spend your first year with a bang.
- Do not be afraid of the unknown.
Many ruin their social life by the fact that they are afraid to move somewhere or get acquainted with new people, basing their thoughts on the fact that they do not know anyone. Even when you need someone to help you with college tasks you can find assistance with some reliable resource indeed. One thing that you will understand at the university is that friends do not necessarily appear from nowhere. Important is to interact with people, express thoughts, wonder and ask questions. Do this within reason, of course. If you are interested in people, they will show interest in you. It is the best to start this during the Freshman Week when everyone is in the same boat and actively look for people to be friends. Thus, you get to know what is a freshman in college.
Communicate with your neighbors around the room / apartment.
This does not mean that you should be best friends with them all, but keep in mind that you are together sharing the common wall almost 24/7. Bad relations with neighbors spoil energy in your place of residence; namely, this place is your new home, therefore keep it in such conditions that you feel calm and protected from external problems in it; lastly, a feeling of ‘willing to return’ soon is essential. There will be times when you will be angry with one of the neighbors for drinking out your milk, or for the other because he or she did not wash a bowl after use, but, generally, being in a good relationship can be helpful.
- Be active.
Being active means being interesting not only for other people but, first of all, for yourself. The first year in college is quite a difficult period in the life of every person because it is a huge responsibility for themselves and for their further actions. For some, for example, it ‘s hard to determine the specialty that they would like to study to find themselves successful later on, at least for themselves. It is your activity in the social life of the college that will give you the opportunity to not only learn in practice what you like to do and what not but also the opportunity not to lose a heart [in case you do not get something, or will miss home].
- ‘No’ to a constant nightlife.
Parties are an integral part of the college but do not let it be abused by. Not only will this disturb your daily routine, worsen your health and knock out other areas of your life, but it can still greatly affect your academic performance. After all, study and knowledge are the reasons why you have decided to enter a college.
- Do not allow yourself to spend all the money that was allocated for a month at a time.
The question of money regards each student in a college. Since you are a student, you want to go out of course, however, keeping in mind that financial capacity is one of the key factors of complete sustainability is essential for a productive college start; at least, the bars will not go away anywhere. These study tips for college freshmen sound funny but at the time are too realistic. How cheaply drinks on campuses would not seem like in total, if you add up all these purchases, you run the risk of getting into debt, or you may not be able to afford the necessary purchases such as food and bills. Drinking can be a famous and ‘common’ student’s fun but being aware of other leisure options available to you, for example, gym, society and club meetings sometimes help.
- Do not try to fit in.
In every college, there is a group of people who seem to be very popular; in other words, they communicate with everyone, and everyone wants to be ‘approved’ by this group. People try to change themselves and behave differently only to be loved and approved by others. In the end, it all will not matter when you graduate from college. The only thing that will have an impact is what you took out of the walls of the college and whom you became. Changing yourself in order just to please others will not bring anything useful to your later life, except as more pushing away from achieving your desires
