12/23/2009 - John Cantwell to become the new Editor-in-Chief of JIBS
John Cantwell is to be the new Editor-in-Chief of JIBS, for the three year term from 2011-13. He will take responsibility for the processing of new submissions to the journal from July 1st, 2010. He is Professor of International Business at Rutgers Business School, which he joined in Fall 2002. In 1993-2002 he was Professor of International Economics at the University of Reading. He was previously an Associate Editor of JIBS, and is currently a Consulting Editor of the journal.

As a Ph.D. student, John Cantwell was supervised by John Dunning, who founded and led the Department of Economics at the University of Reading from 1964, until he (John Dunning) moved to Rutgers University in 1987. John Cantwell was first appointed as a lecturer (assistant professor) in the Reading group in 1984, was granted tenure at Reading in 1988, became a reader (associate professor) in 1991, and a full professor in 1993. Apart from his Reading Ph.D., John Cantwell also holds degrees from the University of Oxford (New College, in Philosophy, Politics and Economics), and the University of London (Birkbeck College, in Economics).

Having worked with John Dunning in the earliest stages of his career, John Cantwell became independently best known as the author of Technological Innovation and Multinational Corporations (Basil Blackwell, 1989), which book was based on his Ph.D. thesis. That book helped to inspire a new literature on multinational companies and technology creation, a research field that took off during the 1990s. Altogether, in a career of about 25 years so far, he has published 11 books, over 55 articles in refereed academic journals, and over 70 chapters in edited collections. He has an overall citation count of around 1,500 in the main social sciences journals, making him one of the most cited authors in research in the international business field.

In 1992, John Cantwell served as the President of the European International Business Academy (EIBA). In December 2001 he was elected as one of four EIBA Founding Fellows, and he acted as the Secretary of the EIBA Fellows from 2003-07. John Cantwell was elected as a Fellow of the AIB in 2005. He was elected as the Vice President of the AIB for 2006-08, and in this capacity he was responsible as the Program Chair for the AIB conference program in Milan in 2008.

12/15/2009 - JIBS 40th Anniversary Special Issue
In 2008, AIB celebrated its 50th anniversary, and in 2009 the official publication of AIB, Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), celebrated its 40th anniversary. To commemorate these two milestones JIBS has published a Special Issue, the “JIBS40/AIB50 Anniversary Issue: Innovations in International Business Theory”, including articles from Johanson and Vahlne, as well as Buckley and Casson, which have been made available for free online. Please see the following press release for more information and access to the special issue.

10/16/2009 - AIB Fellow Peter Buckley receives honorary doctorate from Uppsala
AIB Fellow Peter J. Buckley will receive an honorary doctorate from Samhällsvetenskapliga Fakulteten (Social Sciences) at Uppsala University, Sweden. As stated by Uppsala University, Professor Buckley “has a very strong international position in its field…he has developed theories of the multinational firm and conducted studies on direct investment, the diffusion of technology and knowledge in multinational corporations.” Peter J. Buckley is Professor of International Business, Director of the Centre for International Business, University of Leeds (CIBUL). 10/13/2009 - AIB Fellow Oliver Williamson receives the 2009 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics
AIB Fellow Oliver E. Williamson will receive the 2009 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics (sharing it with Elinor Ostrom). As stated by the Nobel Committee, Professor Williamson received the Nobel Prize for "his analysis of economic governance, especially the boundaries of the firm.” They continued to state: “Oliver Williamson has argued that markets and hierarchical organizations, such as firms, represent alternative governance structures which differ in their approaches to resolving conflicts of interest. The drawback of markets is that they often entail haggling and disagreement. The drawback of firms is that authority, which mitigates contention, can be abused. Competitive markets work relatively well because buyers and sellers can turn to other trading partners in case of dissent. But when market competition is limited, firms are better suited for conflict resolution than markets. A key prediction of Williamson's theory, which has also been supported empirically, is therefore that the propensity of economic agents to conduct their transactions inside the boundaries of a firm increases along with the relationship-specific features of their assets.” More information can be found at: http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/economics/laureates/2009/press.html

9/16/2009 - Death of Richard D. Robinson
The Academy of International Business extends its sympathy to the loved ones of Richard D. Robinson, who passed away on September 5, 2009 at the age of 88. One of the founding members of AIB, Dr. Robinson also served as a President of AIB (1969-1970) and was actively involved in the launch of JIBS as the journal of AIB during his term. An obituary written by himself is available at his Fellows profile page.

8/22/2009 - Remembering Professor Hans Thorelli
Professor Hans Birger Thorelli passed away on August 18, 2009 at the age of 88 years. Dr. Thorelli was Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA where he also held the position of E.W. Kelley Professor of Business Administration from 1974 until his retirement. Professor Thorelli’s affiliation with Indiana University began in 1964.

As a fellow native of Sweden, my first thoughts are that we have lost a true gentleman, a remarkable marketing and international business scholar, and a close personal friend. Professor Thorelli was an elected fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (Kungliga Ingenjörsvetenskapsakademien) which was founded in 1919 by King Gustaf V.

As the Executive Director of the Academy of International Business, I am saddened that AIB has lost one of its most charismatic and unique AIB Fellows. Hans had an exceptional passion for scholarship, an energetic motivation to advance knowledge that was uncanny, and an entrepreneurial spirit unlike most.

Whether the focus was on research such as his seminal article in the Strategic Management Journal in 1986 on “Networks: Between Markets and Hierarchies” or his drive to make Intopia the cutting-edge global business strategy simulation, Professor Thorelli made a tremendous mark in the world of scholarship and education. He received three degrees from the University of Stockholm, including his Ph.D. This scholarship and knowledge led to grants from such prestigious organizations as the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ford Foundation along with being a Delegate to U.S. President Ford’s Summit Conference on Inflation and the Economy in 1974. Professor Thorelli received a myriad of honors and awards during his illustrious career and carried on his professional drive until his passing. Scholarship clearly was not work to Hans, it was his lifelong passion.

Like the positions he took in his extraordinarily well crafted article on networks in SMJ, Professor Thorelli exemplified the “holistic” scholar and thinker. As in the network focus, Hans Birger Thorelli was a holistic person, crossing functional boundaries with great success and leaving everlasting positive marks on society.

Tomas Hult, AIB Executive Director

3/8/2005 - There is only one JIBS!
It has been brought to our attention that a new journal has been launched bearing a similar name to AIB's flagship publication, "Journal of International Business Studies," by an organization with a name similar to AIB. The AIB Board of Directors and the Executive Secretariat are aware of the situation and monitoring developments. Since many AIB members are receiving emails from this new organization, we want to clarify that there is no link between AIB and the new organization or its products, and we did not provide the mailing list of our members to the organization. AIB and JIBS are copyrighted by our organization. As a point of history, AIB was founded in 1959, and the Journal of International Business Studies (using the JIBS acronym) was launched in 1970.

We also wish to inform the membership of the AIB Constitution, Article II: "Any Academy member knowingly using the Academy name, logos or marks for a prohibited purpose shall be expelled from the Academy, and may be reinstated only after two years, upon favorable response by the Executive Board of the AIB to a written petition from the individual expelled."

As a member of AIB was listed as a joint managing editor of the similarly named journal, he was expelled from AIB in December 2004. Similar action will be taken with any other AIB member involved in any copycat activity involving AIB and JIBS.
